AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE.. FILM FILM FILM

How many Australian Films can you name?

How many have you seen?

When was the last time you went to the movies to see an Australian film?

Why is it that we all see Australian Films in a negative way, I mean yes there are some great films that have come out of the industry, but why does the industry struggle as a whole?

Many argue that one of the primary downsides of the industry is the age-old stereotype that comes along with it of the Australian outback, rednecks, ‘bogans’ Holden utes, riding kangaroos to school and fighting crocodiles on a regular basis. Has the industry just lost new ways to be able to stop these stereotypes being seen as a recurring trend?

According to the latest Australian box office reports, ‘2014 is shaping up to be Australian cinema’s worst domestic performance in 10 years’ . (Roach, 2014).

If we take a look into the history of Australian films, we can certainly see where these tedious stereotypes stem from. One of the most primary themes that arose during the 1970’s, when Australian films were rising in popularity across the nation, was the unkind reality and dangers of the outback.

One that comes to my mind that is the epitome of Australian Film is the film series ‘Crocodile Dundee’ from 1986, with Paul Hogan, which penetrated global audiences, and in turn set in stone a certain image of Australian culture. In any given culture we can see emerging stereotypes. Every culture is trying to make their mark to inform and create an awareness otherwise all movies would be the same. Yes these stereotypes follow on and maybe we get mocked for it, but just because people think all we is have BBQ and ride kangaroos to school I think that we have it pretty good, there are many cultures that are feared of because of the way they are presented in film.

On the flip side– Australian media content is still highly sought after, and has an audience of millions waiting to view it. This can be seen in the ever-growing amount of Aussie television shows capturing audiences not just in Australia but all over the world. Reports from the Sydney Morning Herald for the television ratings of the first half of 2014 show that 20 of the top 30 shows being watched are Australian. With 6 of these 20 top rating Australian programs being written, produced and starred by Australians and raking in roughly one million viewers each episode (Dale, 2014).

According to Toli Papadopoulos of the Crikey.com Review Page, there have been common critiques that Australian filmmakers are too ‘art-house’ (2014) I definitely can agree with this statement. I think that Australian films don’t have that appealing want to watch factor that other international films portray, they seem to all have the same nature of storyline and emotion. We cannot say this for all films there are some films that have had a huge impact such as Muriel’s Wedding and The Sapphires and one, which I think I know by heart thanks to year 11 English, Strictly Ballroom that is now made into a theatre musical. These films bring out the great Aussie comedy and drama that can be linked to popular TV content produced in Australia.

While the Australian film industries crisis is not something, which is going to be fixed overnight, I do believe there is hope and when the correct changes are made to enhance the issues faced the industry will be highly ranked. Maybe looking into factors such as the marketing and advertising techniques used could help. We need to be able to support our local Aussie films and keep them going.
Of course I do admit that while these movies do not appeal to me like other ones, I cannot speak for the wider population. I think it comes down to the fact that we want something different and we really just want to be entertained!

ARE YOU A PIRATE ?

We have all seen these ads below…. they are the ones that you cannot  fast forward over , so you have to watch whether you like it or not.

When you watch it, do they make you think at all about Piracy? Or do you think that it is just a way to try scare people?

We could say that as media grows, so too do the all rules and regulations that are attached to it. The media is now an intruder in our everyday lives, we can see a moral panic surrounding families beginning to emerge. Strict rules about media usage are less likely to exist because media is so embedded in our lives, we live, love and breathe media.

This also comes with age. As many others would know, when we became older, we began to use media in everyway possible, through the television, online, and on laptops and phones. Along with this increased usage came new limitations, particularly online. We could only access certain television shows if they were ‘available in my country’ and we constantly downloaded music off ‘LimeWire’ (remember. These illegal downloads may have even caused a fair few viruses on our families PC (Woops).

Is all this panic caused us all to be assumed pirates, when we go to the cinema or are online we are being constantly watched and monitored. No longer can you sit back in the cinema and think that no one is watching as cameras will greet your every wrong doing.

In an article Anti-Piracy Tool For Cinemas Will Recognize Emotions it states that:

Hindering piracy is priority number one for movie theaters nowadays. In dealing with a tiny minority, theater owners are slowly alienating their customers by employing measures such as metal detectors, night-vision goggles, bag and body searches and audio watermarks. Everyone is treated as a potential pirate.

We even know are surrounded and influence by television reality shows such as Big Brother who is all about watching people and see what happens when people are manipulative and sly, what does this say for the society we are becoming?

What is this saying that is okay to watch people in private settings and on the other side of this when looking at Cinemas we are not trusted!

We live in a society now where the norm is to be watched at every moment, because of poeple that like to test the system and commit illegal actions.

I SAID MULTITASKING … Beeppp, Hold on just texting, and watching this clip on Youtube!

PICTURE THIS: Your sitting in a room, your alone. Yet, you have about 8-10 tabs opened on your laptop, your TV is on because you are catching up on an episode that you missed, plus your texting about a zillion people at the same time, Oh and you just made cupcakes which are in the oven!!!!

Is this you??

multitasking

Is this a concerning problem? (FACT WHY TO SAY NO TO MULTITASKING)

Would the quality of work and life be a lot smoother if we were to stop and do one thing at a time with no distractions… who are we kidding we couldn’t stop that even if we tried. Its part of the social norm of life to be constantly trying to cram in as much as we can into our day in order to feel accomplished that we got as much as we can do. We always want more, whether it be in time, money, love or friends… there’s just never enough!

I notice everytime I’m in a lecture the amount of people who have multiple tabs opened ranging from Youtube clips, checking their social status on Facebook to online shopping while writing notes on what they are taking in from the lecture… it is crazy!
Why have we become such multi-taskable people, is this a positive for us in the future, will jobs expect more because of this? We will ever burn out from overdoing things?

I think it has made us a society of risk takers, we are now starting to increase this multitasking trend into dangerous situations and people have simply, lost their patience skills! Driving and texting has become a big issue, how could texting your mate while driving do you any good when what your texting in that moment isn’t really that important, yet we would risk our life on it. Why can’t we wait?

While you are reading this blog STOP and see how much of a multi-tasker you?

  • How many tabs have you got open?
  • Are you listening to your Ipod?
  • Watching the Beyonce and Jay Z tour?
  • Is the TV on?
  • Are you texting people?
  • Are you online shopping?
  • Are you also cooking?

YOU MY FRIEND ARE STUCK IN THE TREND

LOOK UP!!

▶ Get Off The Phone Song – YouTube

Picture this… your out for lunch/dinner/clubbing/wedding etc and you look around and all the people that are in the same area are on their phones either texting, taking selfies or looking at social media. What has the world come to, where is the socialising without the interference of technology. We are living in a world that technology has become an obsession. We are constantly updating our pictures and documenting our lives to the world to show people what we are doing or where we are!
ARE YOU GUILTY OF THIS?

But what are we trying to prove, by taking part in the phone obsessed trend, what are we getting out of it?

You go on to Instagram and people are basically showing off amazing outfits or beautiful scenery from their holiday, or delicious food that someone is eating, we basically can know a lot about what people are doing because we are so attached to our devices constantly updating the page to see newer posts.

Funny Smartphone Addicts Commercial Funny Clip 2013 – YouTube

How would you feel if you had left your phone at home and didn’t have it for a whole day…

Can you imagine the meltdown; missing out on stalking people, and taking pictures and making out that you have the perfect life. What a disaster Quick drop everything your doing and run back home and get it right…

This Video shows an example of how much we could be missing out on because we are looking down rather than up and away from our phones.

Look Up – YouTube

I see it like this our phone devices are an extension of ourselves we wake up with it sleep with it, use it when we are eating, socializing, bored (On the toilet)… Its something we cannot go a day without, and its like death has struck if it’s broken.

WE ARE SIMPLY OBSESSED!

Donna Haraway (1991, p.291) , in her chapter, “A Cyborg Manifesto”, describes the cyborg as the “hybrid of machine and organism”.

Are we; those who rely on technology as a source of information, as an outlet to communicate, to learn, to function, TO BREATHE, are we any different from this description?

In summary Haraway states (1991, p.294) that there is a direct connection between us and our tools to the point where it is almost impossible to distinguish a difference. “Machines are everywhere and they are invisible”. “Biological organisms have become biotic systems, communications devices like others.” (Haraway, 1991, p. 313) She also states that modern humans, using technology experience a trancelike state. (Haraway 1991)

We are not living in the moment if we keep looking down at our phones, imagine how much we are missing because we simply didn’t look up.

I SET YOU A CHALLENGE.. TRY GO A DAY WITHOUT YOU PHONE

I DARE YOU
